Assistant Editor, American Heritage

OSummer 2017 issueVERVIEW

American Heritage Magazine, the 70-year-old magazine of American history, seeks to hire an Assistant Editor starting June 1, 2021 to work on a wide range of tasks including article acquisition, line editing, writing news items and blog posts, and social media posting, especially on our Facebook page. He or she will report directly to the Editor-in-Chief, Edwin S. Grosvenor.

The Assistant Editor will also help with its sister publication, Invention & Technology, the only popular magazine of the history of innovation and invention.

This is a great opportunity for a recent graduate to gain hands-on experience and have senior responsibilities at two respected national magazines. A knowledge of American studies or demonstrated interest in history would be helpful. Also, the ability to join occasional staff meetings is also preferred.

The American Heritage office is located three blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro station at 1607 22nd Street, NW, Washington, DC.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Joint Application for a Poynter-Koch Fellowship

The successful candidate for this position will be an early career professional who will also apply to and be accepted for a Poynter-Koch Media and Journalism Fellowship, which is a year-long program of classes one afternoon a week taught by seasoned journalists affiliated with the Poynter Institute for Media Studies. You will join a cohort of colleagues who are passionate about journalism and the critical role of a free press in society.

This program is for early-career professionals who are aspiring future leaders in the industry. Do not apply if you have not had recent journalism training in college or graduate school and/or up to four years of experience in publishing.
