Frederick Douglass born

Abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass is born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in Talbot County, Maryland. Douglass, born into slavery, did not know his exact birth date but celebrated on February 14. After escaping from slavery Douglass published his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which became an international best-seller and helped Douglass affect 19th-century social reforms.

Oregon enters the Union as the 33rd state. The "Beaver State" followed its southern neighbor California as a free state and sent troops to defend the United States during the Civil War.

St. Valentine's Day Massacre

Associates of Al Capone and the Chicago Outfit gun down seven members of the North Side Gang in Chicago. The executions, labeled the "St. Valentine's Day Massacre", had targeted "Bugs" Moran, leader of the North Side Gang that frequently clashed with Capone during Prohibition over bootlegging and gambling.
