President Andrew Johnson impeached

The House of Representatives impeach President Andrew Johnson, bringing Johnson up eleven articles of impeachment. Johnson, who succeeded President Abraham Lincoln three years earlier, had been at odds with the Republican Congress, and, following his dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, impeached Johnson for violating the Tenure of Office Act. He would later be acquitted when the Senate could not reach a 2/3 vote to convict.

Chester Nimitz born

Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz is born in Fredericksburg, Texas. Nimitz, one of the men to serve as Fleet Admiral, commanded the U.S. Pacific Fleet after Pearl Harbor, leading to naval victories at the Battle of Midway, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. These naval victories allowed Allied forces to advance towards Japan. Nimitz ultimately received Japan's surrender aboard the USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.

Marbury v. Madison decided

The United States Supreme Court rules in favor of the plaintiff in Marbury v. Madison. Led by Chief Justice John Marshall, the court did rule on the unconstitutionality of the Judiciary Act, establishing a precedent called judicial review, which allows a court to assess the constitutionality of legislation.
