  • Final Battle of the Alamo

    After a 13-day long siege, Mexican forces led by General Antonio López de Santa Anna launch the final assault on the Alamo, overwhelming the Texan defenders. The Texas fighters held off two initial attacks despite being outnumbered 10-to-1 but could not fend off the larger Mexican army.

  • Dred Scott verdict decided

    In the Dred Scott v. Sanford decision, the United States Supreme Court rules against Dred Scott, a slave who travelled with his master across Illinois and other free Northern states that had outlawed slavery. The court, led by Chief Justice Roger Taney, decided that no people of African descent had American citizenship and would not have the right to due process, waiving jurisdiction over Scott's lawsuit.

  • Missouri Compromise

    President James Monroe signs the Missouri Compromise, allowing Missouri to enter the Union as a slave state while admitting Maine as a free state. The compromise also forbid slavery north of the 36°30′ parallel with the exception of Missouri.
