  • "Evil Empire" speech

    President Ronald Reagan calls the Soviet Union an "evil empire" for this first time while speaking before the National Association of Evangelicals in Orlando, Florida. Reagan's foreign policy increased the pressure on the Soviets by increasing Defense spending and placing nuclear missiles in Western Europe.

  • NYSE founded

    The New York Stock Exchange is founded in downtown Manhattan. Currently the largest stock exchange in the world, it was founded on Wall Street as the New York Stock & Exchange Board.

  • Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. born

    Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. is born in Boston, Massachusetts. The son of a famous writer, physician, and intellectual, Holmes served with distinction in the Civil War in the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Regiment. In 1901 President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Holmes, who had taught at Harvard Law School, to the Supreme Court, where his opinions and decisions have influenced the last 100 years of American jurisprudence.
