  • Battle of Belmont

    General Ulysses S. Grant leads a small Union force at the Battle of Belmont in Missouri. Grant's soldiers overran a Confederate camp on the Mississippi River before being repulsed by a larger, more organized Confederate force.

  • Battle of Tippecanoe

    Governor William Henry Harrison leads American forces to victory at the Battle of Tippecanoe in present-day Battle Ground, Indiana. Tecumseh's Confederacy, an organized resistance to American territorial expansion, could not rebound from the defeat.

  • Operation Phantom Fury

    A joint American, British, and Iraqi force launches Operation Phantom Fury in and around Fallujah, in central Iraq. The offensive, also known as the Second Battle of Fallujah, was one of the costliest battles of the 2003 Iraq War as coalition soldiers successfully pried Fallujah from insurgent control.
