    Abolitionist and social activist Elizabeth Cady Stanton is born in Johnstown, New York. Stanton helped organize the 1848 Seneca Falls Convention, where her Declaration of Sentiments defined the push for female equality in the 19th century.

  • Naval Battle of Guadalcanal

    American and Japanese naval forces clash in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, fought during the six month-long Guadalcanal Campaign in the Solomon Islands. The U.S. Navy sought to protect Henderson Field, a captured Japanese airfield on Guadalcanal, from a Japanese amphibious assault.
