  • Peace Corps established

    President John F. Kennedy issues Executive Order 10924, establishing the Peace Corps. Kennedy had proposed American humanitarian programs in the developing world while in the Senate, and Congress passed the Peace Corps Act on September 22, 1961.

  • President Grant establishes Yellowstone

    President Ulysses S. Grant signs The Act of Dedication bill, officially establishing Yellowstone as the first American national park. Following a 1871 geological survey by Dr. Ferdinand V. Hayden, Congress passed legislation to protect Yellowstone four decades before the National Park Service was established.

  • Articles of Confederation ratified

    The Continental Congress becomes the Congress of the Confederation following the ratification of the Articles of Confederation. While written in 1777, the Articles required unanimous ratification. When Maryland ratified the Articles of Confederation on March 1, the country was formally established as the United States of America.
