  • Operation Rolling Thunder begins

    Operation Rolling Thunder commences as U.S. Air Force bombers attack a North Vietnamese storage depot near Xom Bang. The strategic bombing campaign, designed to inflict heavy damage on the North Vietnamese military and economy, continued until 1968.

  • Slave trade abolished

    Following the constitutional twenty-year moratorium, Congress passes the Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves, ending the transatlantic slave trade. Despite the new law, illegal transcontinental slave trading did take place. In the United States, however, the slave population had become sustainable, and owners continued to trade American slaves until the Thirteenth Amendment outlawed slavery.

  • Texas independence day

    Following the Convention of 1836, Texas declares its independence from Mexico. Meeting in Washington-on-the-Brazos during the Texas Revolution, the delegates drafted a constitution, modeled after the United States Constitution. Following Texan independence, the republic was later annexed and declared the State of Texas on December 29, 1845.
