Irish soldiers serving in the British Army begin the first St. Patrick's Day parade in New York City, beginning with festivities at the house of John Marshall, an Irish Protestant. General George Washington became the first American leader to grant the holiday in 1780 while as commander of the Continental Army, he gave his soldiers the day to promote solidarity with the Irish in their shared fight for independence.

British General William Howe evacuates Boston, ending the 11-month siege. George Washington took command of the Continental forces around Boston and positioned heavy artillery on Dorchester Heights, forcing Howe to vacate the untenable position in central Boston.
