  • North Dakota and South Dakota enter the union

    Splitting up the Dakota Territory, both North Dakota and South Dakota enter the Union, becoming the 39th and 40th states, respectively.

  • James K. Polk born

    11th President James Knox Polk is born in Pineville, North Carolina. Polk served as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Governor of Tennessee before being elected in 1844, and Polk oversaw the Mexican-American War and subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

  • Warren Harding born

    29th President Warren G. Harding is born in Blooming Grove, Ohio. Harding was elected to the presidency directly from the United States Senate in 1920, serving from 1921 until his death in office in 1923.

  • Balfour Declaration

    British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour pledges the "establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people," beginning the gradual formation of the state of Israel. The Zionist movement was especially strong in the United Kingdom, the United States, and central and eastern Europe.
