  • Battle of Trenton

    After crossing the Delaware River on Christmas Night, General George Washington leads a surprise attack on the Hessians stationed at Trenton. The Continental Army suffered few casualties while taking nearly 1,000 Hessian prisoners, along with supplies and ammunition. The victory boosted Patriot morale following a string of defeats in New York.

  • Wilson begins to nationalize railroads

    President Woodrow Wilson orders the nationalization of American railroads to meet the demands of World War I. American privately-owned railroads lacked modern equipment and labor standards, and Wilson thought nationalization would optimize performance in the war effort.
